Stay: Plumpjack Squaw Valley Inn

What a stylish little mountain escape this is: The PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn located — where else? — in beautiful Squaw Valley. The three-floor, boutique property models a contemporary lodge feel. Think warm interiors, rough-hewn wood and dramatic amber lighting. The comfy guest rooms sport plush robes, single cup Keurigs and free WiFi. But what (almost) beats the free internet? A bottle of really nice lotion that’s salvation for pesky, dry winter hands. (I loved that stuff).

The Inn’s restaurant, Plumpjack Cafe, easily serves the best food in the area. Chef Wyatt is kinda the man. You’ll probably need a reservation during high season. The intimate dining room attracts a smart crowd, but feel comfortable bringing the kids. An adjacent lounge offers a more casual menu including craft beers on draft and a good cocktail list. In the morning, guests are treated to a substantial breakfast spread with warm dishes complemented by homemade breads, jams and granola. Oddly, there’s not many breakfast options in Squaw so the buffet alone is worth the price of admission.

There’s a small gym tucked in the front of the property and complimentary storage for ski gear. Out back, you’ll find a pool and jacuzzi stretched out under strewn patio lights. Guests also have access to cruisers for a dedicated bike path that skirts the valley. Just don’t bother with your “but we can’t possibly ride in the snow” excuse: they plow the path during winter!
